A Simple Guide to Reading Financial Statements for Investors

If you’re an investor, understanding a company’s financial health is essential. One of the best ways to do this is by reviewing their financial statements, which can provide a wealth of information about the company's performance, profitability, and stability.

Public companies, listed on stock exchanges, are required to release quarterly (10-Q) and annual (10-K) reports. The 10-K is a comprehensive, audited report, while the 10-Q is a reviewed but not fully audited version. These reports contain vital financial statements like:

  1. Balance Sheet – Shows the company’s assets, liabilities, and equity.

  2. Income Statement – Reflects revenue, expenses, and profit over a specific period.

  3. Cash Flow Statement – Tracks the cash inflow and outflow from operations, investments, and financing.

While companies may also provide additional non-GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) data, the financial statements and notes should be your primary focus, as they are the most accurate and regulated parts of the reports.
